The Best Time to Go Kayaking in Otranto

If you’re planning a visit to Otranto, you’ve probably asked yourself:

When is the best time to go kayaking?

The answer may surprise you.

Most people expect us to recommend summer, but after years of guiding kayak tours along the Strait of Otranto, we’ve learned that there isn’t a perfect season—only the perfect day.

Weather Matters More Than the Season

The Strait of Otranto is a dynamic natural environment where conditions can change from one day to the next.

We’ve experienced calm, crystal-clear winter days with mirror-like seas, just as we’ve seen windy days in the middle of August when kayaking simply wasn’t possible.

For this reason, the quality of a kayak tour depends much more on wind and sea conditions than on the month of the year.

That’s also why our most important piece of advice is this:

Don’t wait until the end of your holiday to book your kayak tour.

Instead, book it during the first few days of your stay in Salento. If strong winds or rough seas make the excursion unsafe, you’ll still have time to reschedule it and enjoy the coastline when conditions are at their best.

A little flexibility can make the difference between a good excursion and an unforgettable one.

June: Our Favourite Month

If we had to choose one month, it would be June.

The sea is already warm enough for swimming, temperatures are pleasant and the long daylight hours make it ideal for spending time on the water.

Most importantly, the coastline has not yet been overtaken by the intense boat traffic of the high season.

Paddling beneath the cliffs in June is a completely different experience. The sea caves are quieter, the hidden coves feel more secluded, and the coastline still retains the peaceful atmosphere that makes Otranto so special.

For many of our guides, June offers the perfect balance between excellent weather, warm water and an unspoilt natural environment.

Beyond Summer: The Most Authentic Experience

While summer is ideal for swimming and enjoying the warm sea, many of our favourite kayak tours take place outside the peak tourist season.

During autumn, winter and spring, the coastline becomes wonderfully peaceful.

Without crowds or busy boat traffic, it’s easier to appreciate the sounds of nature, the colours of the cliffs and the remarkable geological features of this stretch of coast.

Although the water is generally too cool for swimming, these seasons offer a more intimate experience.

You’ll notice freshwater springs emerging from the calcarenite cliffs, the delicate maidenhair fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris) growing where moisture is constant, and the ever-changing colours of the Adriatic Sea as the light shifts throughout the day.

For photographers, nature lovers and anyone looking for a genuine connection with the landscape, these quieter months often provide the most rewarding experiences.

We Follow Nature, Not the Calendar

At 18° Meridiano Escursioni, we organise guided kayak tours throughout the year because we know that every season has something unique to offer.

Rather than following the calendar, we follow the weather.

Every excursion is planned according to wind direction, wave height and sea conditions, ensuring that our guests experience the coastline in the safest and most enjoyable way possible.

There Isn’t a Perfect Season—Only the Perfect Day

At 18° Meridiano Escursioni, we don’t believe there’s a perfect season to go kayaking in Otranto.

We believe there’s the perfect day.

The day when the wind finally drops, the sea becomes calm and transparent, and the hidden coves reveal their most beautiful shades of turquoise and emerald. The day when the cliffs reflect on the water, the sea caves echo only with the sound of the waves, and the coastline can be experienced at its most authentic.

That’s why we always recommend booking your kayak tour at the beginning of your holiday. It gives you the flexibility to wait for the best weather window and discover Otranto in the conditions it truly deserves.

There isn’t a perfect season to go kayaking in Otranto. There is only the perfect day.

What are you waiting for? Book your guided kayak tour and let us help you find it.
