Sit-on-Top vs Sit-In Kayak: What’s the Difference and Which One Is Best?

One of the questions we hear most often from people joining a kayak tour in Otranto for the first time is:

“What type of kayak will we use?”

The answer often surprises them: it depends on the season.

During the summer we use sit-on-top kayaks, while in the cooler months we prefer sit-in sea kayaks.

This isn’t a random choice, but the result of years of experience along the coastline of the Strait of Otranto. Each type of kayak has been developed to meet different needs and allows you to enjoy the sea in the most comfortable and natural way.

To understand why, we need to take a step back in history.

The Kayak: A Boat Born for Survival

Long before it became a sport or a way to explore spectacular coastlines like Otranto, the kayak was a tool for survival.

The word kayak comes from the Inuit word qajaq and means “hunter’s boat.”

For thousands of years, the Inuit peoples of Greenland, Alaska and northern Canada built these boats to travel across icy waters, fish and hunt seals.

Every detail of the kayak was designed to solve a specific challenge.

The hull was long and narrow so it could travel long distances with minimal effort.

Its low profile reduced wind resistance, while the paddler sat inside the boat to stay protected from freezing water.

In those environments, falling into the sea could mean dying from hypothermia within minutes.

For this reason, the original kayak was designed as a sit-in kayak, meaning the paddler sits inside the hull.

Even today, thousands of years later, the modern sea kayak follows the same design philosophy: to be efficient, fast through the water and to protect the paddler.

From the Arctic to the Coast of Otranto

Over time, the kayak evolved from a survival tool into one of the most fascinating ways to explore the sea.

Its purpose, however, has remained the same: reaching places where larger boats cannot easily go.

If it once allowed hunters to travel through Arctic waters, today it lets us enter sea caves, paddle beneath dramatic cliffs and reach small hidden coves along the coast of Otranto that would be difficult to visit any other way.

In recent decades, thanks to modern materials such as polyethylene, sit-on-top kayaks have become increasingly popular.

Unlike a traditional sea kayak, the paddler sits on top of the hull instead of inside it.

This design makes the kayak incredibly practical: getting on and off is easy, and you can swim and climb back aboard in just a few seconds.

The sit-on-top kayak doesn’t replace the traditional sea kayak.

It simply serves a different purpose.

Why We Use Sit-on-Top Kayaks in Summer

During our summer kayak tours in Otranto we often stop in secluded coves and in front of sea caves to swim and relax in the crystal-clear waters of the Strait of Otranto.

That’s why the sit-on-top kayak is the perfect choice.

Because you’re sitting on top of the hull, getting in and out of the water is incredibly easy. Simply slide into the sea and climb back aboard in just a few movements, without needing any special techniques.

This allows everyone, even complete beginners, to enjoy the sea with confidence.

You can swim in front of a sea cave, stop in a hidden cove and get back on your kayak effortlessly before continuing the tour.

Many of our guests are paddling a kayak for the very first time during their excursion in Otranto.

The sit-on-top helps them feel comfortable from the very beginning, allowing them to focus on exploring the coastline rather than worrying about falling into the water.

The Kayaks We Use

For our tours we use Rainbow kayaks, an Italian manufacturer that has been designing sea kayaks for more than forty years.

We don’t use the wide recreational kayaks commonly found on beaches or at holiday resorts.

Our Rainbow sit-on-top kayaks feature a longer and narrower hull than standard recreational models.

This makes them more efficient, smoother through the water and much closer to the performance of a true sea kayak.

For this reason, every excursion also becomes an opportunity to learn.

Before setting off, we always spend a few minutes explaining paddling posture, paddle technique and the basic principles of efficient kayaking.

Even guests who have never paddled before begin to learn the correct movements used in sea kayaking while enjoying the simplicity and freedom of a sit-on-top kayak.

Why We Use Sit-In Sea Kayaks in Winter

When autumn and winter arrive, the conditions—and our priorities—change completely.

Swimming is no longer part of the experience, while staying warm and protected from wind and spray becomes much more important.

That’s why we use Rainbow sit-in sea kayaks designed specifically for beginners.

Although they retain all the characteristics of a true sea kayak, these models are slightly wider than performance-oriented sea kayaks.

This makes them exceptionally stable and reassuring from the very first minutes on the water.

The paddler sits inside the cockpit, with their legs protected by the hull.

The result is a kayak that offers much better protection from wind and spray, making it far more comfortable to paddle during the cooler months than a sit-on-top kayak.

Which Kayak Is Better?

In reality, that’s the wrong question.

There isn’t one kayak that is better than the other.

There is only the kayak that is best suited to the paddler’s level of experience and the type of adventure they want to enjoy.

In summer, the sit-on-top allows you to swim in crystal-clear water, explore sea caves and climb back aboard easily after every swim, even if you’ve never paddled before.

During autumn, winter and spring, the sit-in sea kayak provides better protection from wind and spray, making it possible to explore the coastline even when swimming is no longer an option.

They are simply two different ways of experiencing the sea.

Both are extraordinary.
