The coastline north of Otranto is one of the most spectacular stretches of the Adriatic Sea. Towering cliffs, hidden sea caves and crystal-clear water make it a paradise for nature lovers and one of the best places in Salento to explore by kayak.

But what makes this coastline truly unique is something many visitors never notice.

It is not only the sea. It is freshwater.

Where Freshwater Meets the Sea

The cliffs around Baia del Mulino d’Acqua are formed mainly of young calcarenite, a soft and porous limestone rock that allows rainwater to slowly filter through the ground.

As the water travels underground, it naturally reappears along the coastline through numerous small freshwater springs emerging directly from the cliff faces.

In some places, the water trickles gently down the rock walls, while in others it flows from the base of the cliffs before mixing with the Adriatic Sea.

These hidden springs are easy to overlook from land, but from a kayak they become one of the most fascinating features of the coastline.

A Green Oasis Overlooking the Sea

The constant presence of freshwater creates a unique microhabitat along the cliffs.

Even during the hottest months of the year, some areas remain cool and humid, allowing lush Mediterranean vegetation to flourish where it would otherwise struggle to survive.

One of the most remarkable plants growing here is the maidenhair fern (Adiantum capillus-veneris), a delicate fern that thrives only where freshwater flows continuously. Its presence is a natural indicator of the hidden springs that nourish the cliffs throughout the year.

Alongside mosses and other moisture-loving Mediterranean plants, the maidenhair fern creates beautiful green patches that contrast with the golden calcarenite cliffs and the crystal-clear blue waters of the Adriatic Sea.

Seen from a kayak, these hanging gardens transform the coastline into a living landscape full of colour and life.

Discover Hidden Springs by Kayak

Many of these freshwater springs can only be fully appreciated from the sea.

Travelling quietly by kayak allows you to paddle close to the cliffs, observe the water emerging from the rock and discover small corners of coastline that remain hidden from visitors walking above.

Without the noise of engines, you can hear the gentle sound of dripping water, breathe in the scent of Mediterranean vegetation and admire the extraordinary clarity of the sea.

It is a completely different way of experiencing Otranto.

More Than Sea Caves

The famous sea caves are certainly one of the highlights of our kayak tours in Otranto, but they tell only part of the story.

As we paddle along the coast, our environmental hiking guides explain how freshwater has shaped this unique landscape, how these springs support a rich coastal ecosystem and why geology, water and vegetation are so closely connected.

Understanding these natural processes allows visitors to appreciate the coastline not only for its beauty, but also for the delicate balance that makes it so extraordinary.
